The Administration Division is responsible for overseeing and providing administrative support services to all operating divisions within the Department. Staff engineering services is also provided through this division. Since this division provides these services to other divisions of the department, it is funded through both the General Fund and the Water and Sewer Fund. This division includes the Director of Public Works, who is responsible for the operations of the department.

Recycling and Refuse
Public Works Administration is responsible for managing the contractual agreement between the Village and Groot Recycling & Waste Services, Inc., which provides for the collection of residential solid waste and the transportation of this material to the SWANCC transfer station in Wheeling Township. This contract provides for the weekly collection of residential refuse, yard waste, and recyclables. Responsibility for educating the public on and promoting the expansion of the recycling program rests with this division. Compost container “Green Monster” pick-up is also provided through this division. This division also handles questions or issues relating to commercial refuse collection and disposal.

Accountable for the purchasing, distributing, replacing and the repairing of residential recycling bins, yard waste containers, and refuse containers.
Coordinates programs and articles to educate residents on the benefits of recycling and to encourage greater participation in this program

Q: Whom do I contact regarding my garbage bill?
A: Contact the Village Hall Utility Billing Division at (847) 304-3430.
   
Q: I have old paint. How can I dispose of it?
A: If the paint is dried up, you can throw it in the regular garbage. To dry up paint, add kitty litter or oil dry and/or leave the lid open until the paint is completely dry. It is then safe to dispose of as regular refuse. If you have a substantial amount of paint, call Public Works (847) 381-7903 for more information.
   
Q: What can I do with my old refrigerator, stove, water hearer, etc.?
A: Call Groot Recycling at (773) 242-1977 for a "special" pick up. Please be aware, however, they charge a fee for this service, or call Public Works (847) 381-7903 for more information.
   
Q: How do I properly dispose of old pesticides, chemicals, etc.?
A: These are household hazardous waste items. Some municipalities in the surrounding area sponsor Household Hazardous Waste Collection Stations in the spring and fall. Call Public Works (847) 381-7903 for more information or call Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) (847) 296-9205 or check out their website at www.swancc.org.
   
Q: When is garbage day?
A: Garbage day in the Village is on Friday. All refuse, recycling, and yard waste are picked up on Friday. All refuse, recycling, and compost material must be at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on Friday morning. Please contact us regarding holiday pick-up.
   
Q: What items can I put in my compost container?
A: Grass clippings, leaves, sod, flowers, and brush or branches that are less than one-inch in diameter (or about the size of your thumb).
   
Q: What items can be recycled?
A: Newspaper, aluminum, and certain plastic containers. If you need more information, call Public Works at (847) 381-7903.
   
Q: Where can I get woodchips/compost for my home landscaping?
A: They are both available at Public Works located at 300 North Raymond Avenue, from April through October. Please bring your own shovel and containers.
   
Q: Where can I purchase leaf bags?
A: You can purchase leaf bags at the Public Works Department, 300 North Raymond Avenue.
 
 
Parking Maintenance
The Parking Maintenance is coordinated through the Street, Forestry and Property Maintenance Divisions for maintaining the train station, which it leases from the Union Pacific and Village-owned and leased parking lots. Specific areas of responsibility included the maintenance of the train station, including the public restrooms and three (3) train station commuter lots and four (4) Village owned/leased parking lots in the Village Center. Specific services provided include minor maintenance of the building and lots, markings/delineation of pavement, coordination of snow and ice removal contracts, and maintenance of street lights and signage.

Perform minor repairs and provide snow removal services for all pedestrian walkways and other pedestrian areas adjacent to the station.

Central Garage
The Central Garage Division of the Public Works Department is directly responsible for the acquisition, maintenance, repair and disposal of all Village vehicles and rolling stock utilized by all departments of the Village. This division also manages the Village’s fuel distribution facility.

Major Service Activities
Actively seek input from each department for their individual vehicle and equipment needs.
To economically procure vehicles and equipment addressing the respective department’s identified needs. This includes receiving the maximum value from the sale of used equipment.
Perform vehicle and equipment repairs and maintenance and strive to deliver these services in a cost-effective manner. Responsible for scheduling repairs and responding to equipment breakdowns on an as-needed basis to support other departmental activities. A proactive approach is taken toward the maintenance of all vehicles and equipment in an attempt to reduce vehicle downtime and costs.
