What is GIS?

GIS

The GIS (Geographic Information System) Division provides maps and location based information for Village departments and staff. The Village of Barrington uses its GIS system to facilitate information sharing and interdepartmental coordination, improve access to geospatial data, and enhance public services through sound decision-making.

How is GIS used to improve my Village services?

Village staff use GIS on a day-to-day basis to access important data layers such as parcels, zoning, utilities, businesses, and more. The GIS system allows staff to respond quickly to inquiries, access centralized up-to-date information, and communicate location based information with ease. For example, water utility GIS layers can show where a section of pipe is located, both in relation to the rest of the utility network, and in relation to parcels, sidewalks, and other mapped layers. It also stores tabular information about each pipe, such as diameter, material type, length, and slope. The GIS system centralizes and manages spatial information for easy access, analysis, and communication.

The Village is continuously updating and enhancing our GIS data to include the most current information available. In an effort to improve the accuracy and completeness of our GIS data, the Village recently adopted Digital Data Standards which require engineers and contractors to submit geographically referenced CAD or GIS data that can be integrated with existing information in the GIS system whenever they undertake a project in the Village. These standards ensure that the GIS system can be maintained to provide the most up-to-date information for all Village employees to reference.
