Permanent Signs

All new and replacement permanent signage requires a building permit. Information on the Village's sign regulations can be found in the Zoning Ordinance Chapter 4, Part IV: Signs or in the Sign Design Guidelines.  The following information must be submitted for review of a sign permit:

  • 2 copies – scaled and full-color sign drawings
  • 2 copies – current plat of survey (showing building setback & lot frontage)
  • 2 copies – scaled building dimensions Signs

Temporary Community Event Signs

A no fee permit is required for all Temporary Community Event Signage. Temporary Community Event Signs must adhere to the following regulations:

  • The community event being promoted shall be held in Barrington, be sponsored by Barrington businesses or be sponsored by a Barrington-Area civic organization or not-for-profit organization with substantial functional membership and/or participatory connections to the Village of Barrington. All Temporary Community Event Signs shall be consistent with the Village Community Events Sign Policy as amended from time to time.
  • Location. Temporary Community Event Signs shall not be erected on property within any residential district with the exception of residential properties with frontage along an arterial and/or collector street.
  • Signs may be located in rights-of-way subject to approval by the Zoning Official and provided the location will not compromise the public safety and welfare.
  • Display Period. Signs may be displayed a maximum of seven (7) days prior to an event. Signs must be removed within twenty-four (24) hours following an event.
  • Number of Signs. A maximum of six (6) signs shall be displayed for any single event.
  • Size. Shall not exceed eight (8) square feet of surface area and five (5) feet in height.
  • Illumination of temporary signs is not permitted.

Temporary Promotional Signs

A permit is no longer required for temporary promotional signs. However, all temporary promotional signs are still required to adhere to the following regulations:

  • PLEASE NOTE: If a permanent sign is not displayed, a maximum of (1) temporary sign shall be displayed for a maximum of 60 days per calendar year.
  • Location. Temporary Promotional Signage posted only on the tenant space of the business concerned, except if the property is 2.5 ft or less from the public right-of-way, the following shall apply:
    • the sign may be located on a public walk, provided a five (5) ft. wide clear and unobstructed path is provided.
    • The sign shall be removed from the public walk at all times the business is not open.
    • The sign shall not interfere with snow removal.
    • The sign shall not be attached to a utility pole, fire hydrant or street sign.
    • No portion of the sign shall be located over or within a public street, road or alley.
  • Display Period.  One (1) sign for a calendar year and one (1) sign for 60 days per calendar year.
  • Number of Signs.  One (1) sign for a calendar year and one (1) sign for 60 days per calendar year.
  • Type/Size of Signs.
    • Banners on Buildings. Shall not exceed 90% of the signable area or thirty-two (32) square feet, whichever is less and sixteen (16) feet in height.
    • Banners Freestanding. Shall not exceed eight (8) square feet of surface area and five (5) feet in height.
    • Balloons. Shall not exceed five (5) balloons or a dimension of three (3) feet high by three (3) feet wide.
    • Banner Flags. Shall not exceed forty-four (44) inches by thirty-two (32) inches and eight (8) feet in height.
    • Sandwich Boards. Shall not exceed six (6) square feet in surface area and four (4) feet in height.
  • Illumination of temporary signs is not permitted.

Temporary Neighborhood Event Signs

A no fee permit is required for temporary neighborhood event signs. Temporary Neighborhood Event Signs must adhere to the following regulations:

  • The neighborhood event being promoted must be sponsored by a homeowners association representing at least ten (10) homes.
  • Location. Signs may be located in rights-of-way subject to approval by the Zoning Official and provided the location will not compromise the public safety and welfare.
  • Display Period. Signs may be displayed a maximum of seven (7) days prior to an event. Signs must be removed within twenty-four (24) hours following an event.
  • Number of Signs. A maximum of six (6) signs shall be displayed for any single event.
  • Size. Shall not exceed eight (8) square feet of surface area and five (5) feet in height.
  • Illumination of temporary signs is not permitted.

Political Signs

A permit is not required for political signage. All political signage must adhere to the following regulations:

  • Location. Signs cannot be placed on any property without the consent of the current legal property owner. Signs cannot be placed on public rights-of-way.
  • Setback. Signs shall be setback at least twenty-five (25) feet from the edge of pavement of any adjacent street.
  • Display Period. There is no limit on the display period for political signs to the extent provided by 65 ILCS 5/11-13-1.  
  • Number of Signs. There is no limit on the number of political signs that can be displayed.
  • Illumination of temporary signs is not permitted.  

Real Estate Signs
A permit is not required for real estate signage. All real estate signage must adhere to the following regulations:

Parcels more than two (2) acres: 

  • One (1) sign per street frontage.
  • No more than two (2) signs per zoning lot.
  • No zoning lot shall display more than 100 sqft. of signage regardless of the number of street frontages.
  • Except these limitations shall not apply to political signs.

50 sqft.

10 ft.

LOCATION  SETBACK

  • Signs that relate to a specific location shall be posted only on the private property which is the subject of the sign.
  • Such signs shall be set back at least 25 feet from the edge of pavement of any adjacent street.  Where the principal structure is less than 25 feet from the edge of the adjacent street, signs shall be set as close to the structure as possible, with no more than 5 feet between the sign and the structure, but only on private property.
  • Such signs cannot be placed on public rights- of-way.
  • Such signs cannot be placed on any property without the consent of the current owner of record of such property. 

DISPLAY PERIOD

In order to avoid unnecessary interference with vehicular traffic, signs shall be removed within 48 hours after the conclusion of  any event advertised or referred to in such signage, and removal of new development, and construction signs shall be required after the occupancy of 75% total floor space or units except that this restriction shall not be applicable to the display of political campaign signs on residential property as and to the extent provided by 65 ILCS 5/11-13-1/

OTHER

Illumination of temporary signs is not permitted.


    Garage Sale Signs

    One (1) garage sale sign is permitted per garage sale and said sign is permitted as a part of the garage sale permit. For more information on garage sale signs, see Garage Sale Permits
