Susan Elder

Office Assistant
selder@barrington-il.gov
Beginning on April 7, 2020, the Village of Barrington will implement electronic permit review and issuance procedures as part of our response to the COVID-19 crisis.  Please read these policies and procedures in their entirety before contacting Staff or submitting your permit application. Please allow for extended processing times as our Staff works through these entirely new procedures in order to accommodate permit review and issuance remotely and electronically.

INSPECTION SCHEDULING
The Village will continue to conduct inspections on a very limited basis for unoccupied dwellings, exterior inspections and emergency inspections in occupied dwellings required to maintain the safety, sanitation and/or occupation of the dwelling ONLY.  You may contact (847) 304-3400 and select "3" for Development Services to schedule inspections. Inspections will be scheduled for
WEDNESDAYS ONLY.  If your call is not answered, please leave your name, contact information and permit number and you will receive a call back to schedule your inspection.  Your inspection is only confirmed and scheduled if you receive a call back confirming a date and time for your inspection.
Please be advised that due to COVID-19, inspection services may not be available in the weeks to come. If you elect to commence your project at this time, inspection availability may delay your construction schedule. All inspections will still be required, you may not proceed with any construction without completion of the required inspections.

PENDING OR IN PROCESS PERMIT APPLICATIONS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN APPROVED
If you applied for a permit and received review comments via email from the Zoning Division, Engineering Division and/or Building Division please work directly with the Staff person that provided those comments to resubmit documents, provide additional information, etc.  If you did not receive any review comments, please email Susan Elder at selder@barrington-il.gov to check the status of your permit and receive direction on how to reinitiate processing of this permit.

APPROVED & READY TO ISSUE PERMITS
If you previously applied for a permit and it was approved and is now ready to be issued you would have received either email or phone correspondence from our office on or prior to 3/16/20.  For instructions on how to obtain your permit please contact Susan Elder at sedler@barrington-il.gov.  Your permit will not be issued automatically.

NEW PERMIT APPLICATIONS
Beginning April 7, 2020, the Village will begin accepting permit applications and all required supporting documents electronically.  No paper permit submissions will be accepted during this time. Please review the general requirements for electronic permit submission below as well as the submittal requirements specific to your permit type at the end of this section

PLEASE DO NOT RESUBMIT A PENDING PERMIT APPLICATION - You will be charged an additional plan review fee if a duplicate permit application is submitted.  This will not expedite your permit, and may slow review time as staff works to reconcile these applications.

INCOMPLETE OR PARTIAL PERMIT SUBMITTALS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

  1. All permit submittals must be emailed to Susan Elder at selder@barrington-il.gov and include the following information:

    • Email subject line must read Permit Application - [Address of work]”

    • Email must include all required documents in PDF format (see permit specific submittal requirements at the end of this section).

  3. Upon approval of your permit you will receive an email detailing the fees, inspections and conditions associated with your permit and instructions for how to accept the terms and conditions of your permit.  Upon the Village’s receipt of your concurrence to said fees, inspections and conditions, your approved permit documents will be issued electronically via email.

  4. Prior to commencement of any work associated with the permit, you must print the full set of emailed approved permit documents and ensure they are readily available on-site at all times.
