At this time the Village is only coordinating permits for emergency situations.  If you believe you have an emergency situation requiring a permit please contact Marie Hansen at mhansen@barrington-il.gov and indicate "EMERGENCY PERMIT - PROPERTY ADDRESS" in the email subject line.  We will then coordinate the best way to proceed based upon your specific situation.  

The Village will continue to conduct inspections on a very limited basis for unoccupied dwellings, crucial exterior inspections and emergency inspections in occupied dwellings required to maintain the safety, sanitation and/or occupation of the dwelling ONLY.  You may contact (847) 304-3400 and select "3" for Development Services to schedule inspections.  Inspections will be scheduled for Wednesdays ONLY.  If your call is not answered, please leave your name, contact information and permit number and you will receive a call back to schedule your inspection.  Your inspection is only confirmed and scheduled if you receive a call back confirming a date and time for your inspection.  

The rest of our Development Services Staff is still working remotely and available by email to answer questions and provide information.  However, no permits will be accepted, reviewed or issued until further notice. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding during this difficult and unprecedented time.   

The Planning & Zoning Division works with developers, residents, and business owners to interpret and apply the Village's Zoning Ordinance, including the Village's Historical Preservation Overlay District regulations and Historic District Design Guidelines. The Planning & Zoning Division assists property owners and developers  in navigating  the zoning approvals necessary to proceed with their visions. Planning & Zoning Division staff oversees the application process to the Plan Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, and Architectural Review Commission.

The Planning & Zoning Division is also responsible for developing and maintaining plans for thoughtful future development. A primary goal of the department is to maintain the Village’s Comprehensive Plan. Other long range planning efforts include: bikeway and pedestrian planning, corridor and neighborhood studies and housing strategies.

The Zoning Board of Appeals is a recommending body and therefore all recommendations from the Zoning Board of Appeals ultimately go before the Village Board of Trustees for final approval. It is important to note that applying for a variation or special use does not guarantee a positive recommendation from the Zoning Board of Appeals. On average, the petitions process takes between 10-12 weeks to complete. There are fees associated with all variations and special uses petitions. Before submitting a petition, please contact a Zoning Coordinator to schedule a preliminary review meeting. 

Business Registration (Zoning Certificate)
All businesses opening and/or relocating in the Village of Barrington are required to complete a Business Registration/Zoning Certificate. This application must be submitted and approved prior to the business taking occupancy of the space. 

Unincorporated Properties
Parcels located in unincorporated areas surrounding the Village of Barrington may have a Barrington, Illinois address. In most cases (not all), if the property address is five digits, it is located outside of the Village of Barrington. If a property is unincorporated, the Village of Barrington does not have any building or zoning information for these parcels. If you are not certain if your property is within the Village of Barrington, please contact the Development Services Department for more information.
