Crime free housing program
The Village of Barrington Crime Free Housing Program is designed to help residents, owners, and the managers of rental property keep illegal drugs and other criminal activity off of rental property. The program requires property owners to:
- Obtain an annual Residential Rental License
- Attend an educational training session conducted by the Barrington Police Department
- Add the Crime Free Lease Addendum to their tenants’ leases
The program uses a 3-part approach which ensures the crime prevention goal, while maintaining a tenant-friendly approach:
Phase One: Education
This involves a mandatory four hour seminar presented by the Barrington Police Department to landlords and property managers. Topics include: The application process, Crime free lease addendum, benefits of applicant screening, crime prevention, and C.P.T.E.D. Concepts (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design).
Phase Two: CPTED Evaluation
This optional phase certifies that the rental property has met the security requirements for the residents’ safety using Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) standards. A representative from the Barrington Police Department will conduct a security evaluation of the property and make recommendations.
Phase Three: Safety Social
To obtain full certification, property managers and owners will host a Safety Social for their residents to involve them in preventing crime on the property and to get involved in the community. This meeting invites residents to meet with police and property management to discuss the program.
Upon completion of all three phases of the Crime Free Housing Program, property owners may advertise their property indicating participation in the Village of Barrington Crime Free Housing Program. Additionally, use of the Crime Free Multi-Housing Program logo will be granted for brochures and advertisements.
- Improved personal safety for tenants, landlords, and property managers
- A stable tenant base
- Lower maintenance and repairs costs
- Increased property values
