Public Works

The Public Works Department is committed to enhancing the quality of life for Village residents by maintaining the infrastructure in the Village and providing high quality services to residents and businesses.

The Department is also committed to environmental preservation and an active forestry program. We utilize stormwater management techniques that promote water quality and have established a solid waste program that promotes environmentally responsible practices, such as recycling, composting, and residential food scrap composting. The department is also responsible for providing water service, wastewater treatment, and maintaining the systems that distribute water and collect wastewater.

Administration

Central Garage

The Central Garage supports all Village Departments by providing service, maintenance, and repairs on Village-owned vehicles and equipment. We service approximately 100 vehicles and pieces of equipment, averaging 60 repairs each month. We also are responsible for managing the fuel distribution facility. The Central Garage has attained the American Society of Engineers Blue Seal of Excellence. Forestry & Property Maintenance

The Forestry & Property Maintenance Division is responsible for the care and maintenance of all Village owned properties, as well as most parkways within the Village. We maintain over 8,000 parkway trees, 70 acres of public parkway, the Village’s hanging baskets and planters, the Metra Station, 11 municipal facilities, 9 passive parks, Barrington Memorial Park, and 4 wetland restoration projects located within our community.

Street Operations

The Public Works Streets Division is responsible for the maintenance of all Village roads, sidewalks, and public rights-of-way. Specific services include maintaining the roadways, sidewalks, curbs and gutters; street sweeping; maintaining pavement markings; removing snow and ice; and brush chipping.  We maintain the Village’s drainage ditches, culverts, storm sewers, and alleys.  We also maintain all Village parking lots, street lights, and street signs.  Learn More about the Street Division’s Service Activities…

Utility Maintenance

The primary function of the Utility Maintenance Division is to maintain and improve the Village’s water distribution and sanitary sewage collection systems.  We perform daily preventative and emergency service, as well as long-term program work.  We maintain all Village fire hydrants, and we install, maintain and repair all water meters in the Village.

Water Production

The Water Production Division is responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of the water production facilities that produce all of the potable water used by the residents of Barrington, and parts of Inverness and Barrington Hills.
