Public Works Programs & Services
Public Works is committed to providing excellent customer service to its residents. Barrington utilizes stormwater management techniques that promote good water quality and have established a Solid Waste Program that promotes environmentally responsible practices, such as recycling, composting, and residential food scrap composting. Public Works is also responsible for providing water service, wastewater treatment, and maintaining the systems that distribute water and collect wastewater.
Chipping Program
Public Works Forestry and Streets Divisions provide seasonal brush pick-up and chipping services along with special pick-ups related to storm damage when winds reach 35+ mph between April 1st and October 31st or 45+ mph between November 1st and March 31st. Seasonal chipping is performed twice per year (Spring and Fall). Christmas trees are collected curbside from Groot, typically the first two weeks of January.
Hydrant Flushing
As part or our overall maintenance of the water supply system, the Village performs annual hydrant flushing. Hydrant flushing removes a considerable amount of the loose mineral contents and settled solids that accumulate in the water system. During hydrant flushing, the water system becomes stirred up until flushing is complete.
Lead Service Line Replacement Program
In August 2021, the State of Illinois signed into law the Lead Service Line Replacement and Notification Act. As such, the Village is required by law to inventory water service line material within the Village’s community water system and report the findings to the State. The main purpose of this inventory is to determine the number and location of water services constructed with lead and to present a long range plan for the replacement of those lines.
Recycling & Refuse Services
The Village of Barrington contracts with Groot Industries, Inc. to collect refuse and recyclables, composting, and residential food scraps from Village residences.
Snow & Ice Control
The Public Works Department clears snow and ice from over 50 centerline miles of roads within the Village limits and Village owned parking and commuter lots.
Street & Sidewalk Maintenance
As is the case in most villages, most major road work in Barrington is performed by hired contractors, while most routine maintenance is performed by Public Works crews. We take care of minor street patching, routine filling of potholes, and some striping on roadways and parking lots. We also maintain the Village’s alleys, curbs, sidewalks, and parking lots and perform routine water and sewer repairs in the right-of-way.
Water & Sewer Services
The Village provides residents and businesses in Barrington and portions of Inverness and Barrington Hills with water and sewer services.
Water Meter Replacement Program
At the Village of Barrington, we are committed to providing accurate and reliable water metering services to our customers. As part of our ongoing efforts to ensure the efficiency of our water system, we have implemented a Water Meter Replacement Program.
Water Conservation
The Village understands the importance of water conservation. As part of our water conservation effort, we have regulations that limit water usage to properties supplied with Barrington water. Outside water use is limited based on time of year, and water supply conditions.
Water Programs
The Village offers non-potable water, on a limited basis, to contractors and others who register with us. The water is derived from our wastewater treatment facility, and may be used for watering trees, shrubs, flowers and turf. Commercially, the water may be used to cool directional boring drill bits, concrete and asphalt cutting blades, and to jet sewers. The Village’s non-potable water may NOT be used for drinking, cooking, washing, and similar uses.
