More Trains Through Barrington?

In May 2021, railways in our area made news again as the Canadian National Railroad (CN) and its competitor Canadian Pacific Railway are both vying to merge with the Kansas City Southern Railroad. If CN is successful, the merger will drive more rail freight volumes through the Chicago region, including Barrington. This would not only create more CN line rail traffic, but could also impact Metra routes and Amtrak as well.

Barrington has sent a letter to the Surface Transportation Board (the federal regulating agency) encouraging the board to carefully consider this proposed merger and its potential impacts on our region. We have also brought this to the attention of regional groups and encouraged other Chicago-area communities to do the same.

Given our at-grade crossings and the length, weight, and slow speed of our many CN trains, having even more rail traffic flowing through Barrington would be extremely impactful to our community. We hope the Surface Transportation Board will look very closely at the impacts of this proposed merger.

Please click on the letter above if you would like additional information or contact information. Please note that there will likely be time for public comment if the proposed merger advances. Also, you may contact your Congressperson and state your views on the merger as well.
