Voting registration is open all year, except during the 27 days preceding an election and the day after an election.

Online voter registration is available at Illinois State Board of Elections’ website until 16 days prior to any election in Illinois.

Registering to vote has never been easier.  In order to register:

• You must be a United States Citizen.
• You must be at least 17 years old on or before the date of the Primary Election and turn 18 on or before the date of the General or Consolidated Election (16 year olds may preregister to vote).
• You must live in your election precinct at least 30 days prior to Election Day.
• You must not be serving a sentence of confinement in any penal institution as a result of a conviction.
• You may not claim the right to vote anywhere else.

Municipal elections are held every other odd numbered year and Barrington’s elected officials serve staggered terms.  Once the dates are set each election year, they will be posted here.

Please find the 2025 State of Illinois Candidate’s Guide (“Guide”).  This Guide has been issued by the State Board of Elections to provide information and requirements for filing for prospective candidates seeking office at the local municipal level in 2025.  Dates for circulating and filing petitions and objections for independent candidates, as set forth in the Guide, are outlined as follows:

Number of Registered Voter Signatures Required on Petitions:

For independent candidates for the Consolidated Election:  Not less than 5% nor more than 8% (or 50 more than the minimum, whichever is greater) of the number of persons who voted at the last regular election in the district or political subdivision in which such district or political subdivision voted as a unit for the election of officers to serve its respective territorial area.  (10 ILCS 5/10-3)

According to the “Cook County Illinois Official Certificate of Results for the Village of Barrington” (which includes Lake County, Illinois) for the Consolidated Election held on April 4, 2023 – 3,158 voters requested and received ballots.  Based on the foregoing, the number of registered voter signatures required is not less than 158, nor more than 252.

Requirements for filing petitions are included in the Guide.  The Village Clerk will accept petitions only at the Barrington Village Hall, 200 South Hough Street, Barrington, Illinois, during the regular office hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., provided however, on the last day for filing, the Village Clerk will accept petitions at the Barrington Village Hall, 200 South Hough Street, Barrington, Illinois, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
